Congratulations to Barry Smorgon OAM

The Board of Maccabi Australia, our affiliated States and members join the Australian Jewish community in congratulating Barry Smorgon on being awarded an OAM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours yesterday.

Barry received the honour for service to the community, particularly through Maccabi Australia, and to business. He is a very worthy honouree given his efforts over many years, including:

·       Chairman, Maccabi Australia, since 2007; Member, Board, since 2006; Founding Chairman, Board of Governors, since 2007.

·       Founding Patron, Inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games, 2006.

·       New South Wales Chairman, Australia/Israel and Jewish Affairs Council, since 1998.

·       Appeal Chairman, Jewish Communal Appeal (JCA), 1998-2004; Appeal Campaign Chairman, 1997; Honorary Life Governor (JCA), 2005.

·       Director, DBR Investments and DBR Corporation, since 1980.

·       Chairman, Jalco Australia, since 1996.

·       Current Chairman, Pack and Send stores.

·       Director, Smorgon Consolidated Industries, 1968-1993.

 Barry’s philanthropic contributions include:

·       Chairman’s Leadership Foundation, Sydney Opera House

·       The Garvan Institute of Medical Research

·       The Breast Cancer Network Australia
