MAI EXECUTIVE
Maccabi Australia’s Executive consists of a President, a Chairman, five Directors and two Directors appointed by the Board. The full Executive of Maccabi Australia meets a minimum of eight times a year, continuing its commitment to strong governance, sound decision-making and national Jewish strategic leadership.

Harry Procel, President
Harry Procel is currently in his fifth year as President of Maccabi Australia. He joined Maccabi AJAX in Victoria in 1967, and competed as an athlete for 25 years, attending 15 Senior Carnivals over that time. Harry served as a Board Member of Maccabi Victoria for 18 years, and was awarded Life Membership in 1992. He has represented Australia at six Maccabiot, including twice as Head of Delegation. Harry served as Head of Delegation to the Pan American Maccabi Games and two JCC Maccabi Games in the USA. He was also Chef de Mission at the European Maccabi Games.
Harry recently retired following a 20-year career as Managing Director of a jewellery wholesaling company.

Barry Smorgon OAM, Chairman
Barry participated in his first Senior Carnival in Athletics as a 14 year old. He competed for Maccabi Athletics from 1962 till 1970, winning many awards as Jewish champion, and went on to the Maccabiah Games in Israel in 1969 as a member of the Athletics Team. Barry also played Australian Rules Football for AJAX Football Club from 1970 to 1978, playing 100 games. He served on the Committee of both clubs as Vice President, as well as on the Maccabi Victoria Executive. Barry was Patron of MAIG`S in Sydney 2004 and will again be Patron in 2010. He joined the Executive of Maccabi Australia in 2006, and created the Board of Governors in 2007, serving as Founding Chairman, as well as chairman of MAI. He is a member of the Justification Committee for the Maccabiah Games 2009.
In business, Barry serves as Executive Chairman of the Jalco Group, employing over 600 people, and Sandbar Investments, a private investment company. He is a Director of DBR Corporation as well as several other private companies.

Lisa Borowick
Portfolio : Treasurer
Lisa has been involved with Maccabi since the age of 9, playing basketball for Maccabi and at State level. Involved in Carnival administration since 1993, Lisa was awarded the MAI “15 Year Participation Certificate” for her commitment to the Maccabi Carnival programme. As a member of the Maccabi Victoria Board, Lisa served as Vice President, Treasurer and MAI Councillor and was awarded Life Membership, 2006. Lisa is Australian General Manager for the 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel, 2009. She was Team Manager (Open) for the 17th Maccabiah Games (2005). Head of Delegation to the 11th Pan American Games in Buenos Aires 2007/08, and the inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games - Sydney 2006. With a Bachelor of Economics degree (Monash University), Lisa is currently the Chief Financial Officer for Intrapac Projects Pty Ltd. She has been a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants & Australian Institute of Management since 1994.

Tom Goldman OAM
Portfolio : Head of Delegation for Maccabiah 2009
Tom's 40 year involvement with Maccabi includes 9 previous Maccabiot. He is a past President of Maccabi NSW and past President of MAI (1994-1998). As a result of his extensive service and commitment to Maccabi he is now a Life Member of both MAI and Maccabi NSW. In his working life Tom is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Travel and was formerly Chairman of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents NSW Branch, Director of the Australian Federation of Travel Agents and Chairman and Director of Travelscene Limited.

Ilan Kogus
Portfolio : Leadership Development and Training
As a Program Facilitator, Ilan comes to the MAI Executive with 18 years experience in helping organizations “win in their game of business” and reach high profitability.
Dr Kogus is an experienced business coach specializing in the growth and development of small, medium and large multi-national companies in a wide range of industries in Australia and overseas. Dr Kogus has been the facilitator of Australia “2020 National Health and Hospital Review Commission”. He is also known for his work with elite sporting teams including the Australian Wallabies, Tennis Australia, the Australian 2000 Olympic Team, the Sydney Flames and NZ Rugby.

Sam Parasol OAM
Portfolio : Fundraising, particularly for the Maccabiah Games 2009
With Maccabi experience going back over 40 years, including 5 years as President of Maccabi Victoria 1996-2001, Sam has been a member of the MAI Executive since 1992. A veteran of 15 Carnivals, Sam plays A-Grade table tennis, representing Australia at the Maccabiah Games, Maccabi Australia International Games, and the Pan American Games. Sam holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Monash University, and is the Managing Director of his own successful fashion company. He is Chairman of Caulfield Park Bendigo Community Bank, an Executive member of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, and has given long-standing service to the Emmy Monash Home for the Aged. Sam is a Life Member of Maccabi Victoria and was inducted into the Maccabi Inaugural Hall of Fame in 2000.

Jeff Houseman
Portfolio : Maccabi Australia International Games
Jeff was elected to the MAI Board in 2009, replacing the departing Michael Swibel. He has been a member of Maccabi NSW since 1965, a Club President, Junior Carnival Team Manager, President and Life Member of Maccabi NSW, and Junior Team Manager for the 18th Maccabiah Games. He is Chairman of the Maccabi Australia International Games (MAIGs) to be held in Sydney 26 December 2010 - 2 January 2011.

Jeff Sher
Portfolio: National Sport
Jeff was co-opted to the MAI Board in 2009. Jeff has been involved with Maccabi since emigrating from South Africa in 1978. As a swimmer and waterpolo player, Jeff has participated in 4 Maccabiot, winning 8 medals. He has been a Club Secretary of the Swimming Club and President of the Waterpolo Club. Jeff has had significant experience in business leadership and administration. He has been a CEO of a public listed company with over 7500 employees; been an Executive Director of a South Africa-based public listed company with total revenue in excess of R14 billion and 14,000 employees; operated in transnational markets as an Organisational Development executive and has changed the pharmaceutical landscape in Australia.
Robert comes to Maccabi Australia with a noted background across not for profit and corporate marketing. Most recently he managed a national charity, Comic Relief Australia for the Seven Network. Prior to this he ran a sports publishing business, Sporting Voice and held senior marketing roles at AXA Australia, Orange UK and BP Australia. Robert has been a member of several Maccabi clubs over the years, has a passion for AFL, Football, Tennis and Golf and is determined to bring his two passions of sport and community together to maximise the potential of Maccabi.
