ABOUT MACCABI AUSTRALIA

connecting our community through sport

Sport has enriched the life of the Australian Jewish Community for more than one hundred years, culminating in the establishment of Maccabi Australia in 1957.

Over the years many events have been associated with Maccabi Australia, including Carnivals, both Senior and Junior, MAIGS, JCC Games, Pan American Games, and the focal point - the Maccabiah Games.

But whatever the nature of the event, a common thread runs through the history of Maccabi Australia – the thread of connecting the community - through friendship, sporting trends, training in leadership and responsibility, even through responses to tragedy.

Maccabi Australia symbolizes community, friendship and the competitive spirit. Just as sport maintains an important role in society, Maccabi Australia enriches the Jewish Community, confirming its place in the history of our people.

THE ISRAEL CONNECTION

Since 1953 Australia has been a proud participant in the Maccabiah Games, a quadrennial sporting event held in Israel and often referred to as the ‘Jewish Olympics’.   “How foolishly ambitious I must have seemed at the London Headquarters of the Maccabi World Union when, in 1933, (as) a very young and brash ex-AJAX President, I enquired about the possibilities of Australia’s participation in that Union’s activities.  Yet think of the size and success of the contingents we now send regularly to the Maccabiah Games in Israel.”
