HISTORY
Maccabi World Sports Organisation conducts sporting events for the Jewish community worldwide. Every four years it conducts a Maccabiah Games in Israel and this occurs the year following an Olympic Games.
In the intervening four years between the Games in Israel, regional international Games are held in the different continents of the world; South America, Europe, and since 2006, Australia. The Australian event is now on the Maccabi world calendar as a four-yearly event.
The Maccabi Australia International Games is supported and endorsed by the Maccabi World Union (MWU), the international governing body for Maccabi sport worldwide. MWU is affiliated with the International Olympic Committee.
In July 2006, the inaugural Maccabi Australia International Games were held in Sydney and we hosted 650 athletes and officials from around the world. Following the success of these Games, Maccabi Australia Inc selected Sydney to be the host city for the 2nd Games.
The Games were established to provide international competition for our Jewish athletes in Australia. It is an object of the Games to promote and raise the profile of Jewish sport in Australia, thereby strengthening the Maccabi clubs. The Games also promote active participation in sport among the Jewish community in Australia, promoting healthy living.
